King John’s Castle
From the cathedral turn onto Nicholas Street and walk north for King John’s Castle C [map] (www.shannonheritage.com; daily Apr–Sept 9.30am–5.30pm, Oct–Mar until 4.30pm), a massive fortification with curtain walls and two drum towers, built by the Normans in the 1200s and rebuilt and extended many times over the years. The outdoor courtyard gives access to the massive bastions and views of the river and city. Reopened in June 2013 following major investment, King John’s Castle has a new visitor centre and exhibition that brings to life its dramatic history through 21st-century technology.
